How to change the details of a domain name registrant: general regulations

For domains registered with Hosting Solutions

As described in the guide How to change the details of a domain name registrant, changing the details of the registrant of a domain registered with Hosting Solutions can be done by following a specific procedure from the control panel.

In general, when registering a domain, the registrant provides a set of details useful to verify ownership and to send service communications concerning the registered domain (e.g. in the case of domain transfer).

It is possible, over time, to modify some of these details:

  • First and last name;
  • Organisation (Company);
  • Email.

It is essential that these details are correct and, in particular, the email account must be accessible and accessed regularly, as it is the destination of all service communications concerning the domain.

Regulation

As regards the regulations to which such changes are subject, this varies depending on the extension of the domain. In particular, two cases can be identified:

[1] .it, .eu and ccTLD domains (geographic domains, such as .de, .es, .fr, etc.)

For these extensions [1], regulation is simple and, to change the details, it is simply necessary to carry out the change registrant procedure from the control panel.

[2] .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, new tld domians (e.g. .bike, .srl, .estate, etc.) and in general all extensions under the regulation of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)

For these extensions too, it is essential to carry out the procedure from the control panel, but this procedure will be followed by an email confirmation of the changes by ICANN:

  • ICANN will send a confirmation email to the old registrant's email address and another to the new registrant's address.
  • Both recipients must confirm the change within 7 days.
    PLEASE NOTE Should one or both recipients fail to confirm, the data change procedure will fail.

ATTENTION for these domain extensions [2] always make sure that the email address is correct, even if the detail to be modified is the email address itself. In the latter case, if the address to be changed became unreachable, it is obvious that the procedure would fail because ICANN would send a confirmation email to an unreachable destination address. To overcome this problem, it is possible to request that the confirmation link be sent by SMS to the telephone number indicated in the registrant's details, by opening a ticket from your control panel account. For this purpose, it is obviously essential that the telephone number provided in the registrant's details is up-to-date and reachable.

ATTENTION changing the registrant's details for these extensions will make the domain name non-transferable for 60 days.
