After the subscription of the service, the virtual server is activated within the cluster of Hosting Solutions, assigning the number of CPU cores, their minimum and maximum frequency, RAM, bandwidth and installing the operating system for the exclusive use of the activated VPS server. The new server, which can be accessed as a physical dedicated server, can host sites or applications guaranteeing high level performance and stability thanks to the specific characteristics of the infrastructure
Differences compared to alternative solutions to Hosting Solutions
There are various types of infrastructure to build VPSs, which differ from each other according to how they share hardware and/or software.
Many solutions involve the use of servers on which a virtualization system is installed that shares both the hardware (CPU, RAM) and the operating system (e.g. Virtuozzo). In this case the VPS server is bound to the host operating system, that is to say it is not possible to modify the version in use or apply updates.
Other solutions are built on virtualization systems that do not involve sharing the operating system, but share a common hardware resource (typically a physical server). In this case the VPS is subject to the load of the server which, depending on the moment, may be such as to significantly reduce the performance of the VPS.
The VPS proposed by Hosting Solutions are part of an infrastructure composed of a set of servers (clusters). The cluster is configured to increase resources as needed and allows the addition of new servers or hot storage devices that is without any service interruption.. Even routine maintenance phases, such as system updates or failure management, do not cause any interruption to the VPS servers as the VMware system transfers VPS from one server to another in the event of maintenance. In addition, thanks to DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler) functionality, the system distributes the VPS load between the servers and optimises it.
Hosting Solutions’ VPS are configured allocating as many resources as to constantly guarantee the functioning, so the number of VPS per physical server is limited: beyond this limit, in fact, the number of physical server is increased. In case of failures such as the damange of disks, RAM banks, power supply, vents, net boards, the service will not be interrupted and even the most critical event, such as the server motherboard failure (never happened so far), will automatically restart the VPS on another server.
The operating system installed on a VPS server and its version is chosen by the customer, who can update it at any time.
To supply the virtual servers, Hosting Solutions uses a cluster of servers from the DELL PowerEdge, series, with the latest generation Intel Xeon Quad-core processors. Power and connectivity are redundant, and the extensive storage resources on NetApp devices allow any disk space to be dynamically allocated, with the possibility of external backup on dedicated servers.
The architecture is further enhanced thanks to the use of specialised servers, including mail servers and dedicated database servers, prepared to optionally host email accounts or external databases.
Benefits of dedicated and distributed hardware
The dedicated hardware of Hostings Solutions virtual servers allows having system resources always available for each VPS: in this way the potentially harmful effects of shared architectures are cancelled. Having memory and CPU resources allocated exclusively, anomalous functions of other VPS servers present on the same physical server will not cause any kind of slowdown or performance deficit.
Any application can be installed on a virtual server, including database servers (MySQL is pre-installed on Linux VPS). Although technically possible, we do not recommend the installation of a mail server because, in addition to requiring high system expertise and full-time monitoring, it requires specific hardware and connectivity. To this end, we recommend the activation of specific services related to the single domain, such as domain + 5 email or Mail Server in the case of multiple domains.
Elements of administration
Unlike shared hosting plans, it is possible to install third-party applications on a virtual server because access is reserved for a single user who can then manage the dedicated resources of his server independently In particular, by accessing as root via ssh (in the case of Linux servers) or as Administrator via MSTS MSTS (in the case of Windows servers), you have complete control over the operating system and installed applications.
How to add domains to your VPS
Each VPS includes a domain name of your choice to which you can associate 5 mailboxes of 2 GB each, managed through a control panel and hosted on mail servers separate from your VPS. It will be possible to add unlimited domains on your VPS, by purchasing domain registration services with or without mail.
- If you add a website (domain) without an email service, you can subscribe to the Domain Registration service and set the DNS records through the control panel, so that they point to the IP address of your VPS, activating the website and potential FTP users.
- If you add a website (domain) with an email service, you can subscribe to the Domain + email service which, in addition to registering or transferring the domain, also offers 2 GB email boxes on a dedicated mail server. - If you wish to add a large number of websites (domains) that use mailboxes, we recommend purchasing domain name registrations and a dedicated mail server. separately.
Starting with Gold servers, our VPS include a backup service (25 GB), the Standard Backup, which can be activated on demand and automatically runs on a daily basis. Smart Storage services are available among our OnLine Storage solutions for “ad hoc” solutions or to extend the backup space.

How to use
The contents of the virtual servers are under the complete control of the customer. Root level access or Admistrator will be activated and provided when the service is activated. The customer can change this access data to have exclusive access. The Hosting Solutions staff will not access either the space or the Customer's applications, except for the execution of backup procedures, according to the plan defined with the customer. For security reasons, the service is released with administrative access only. The customer can then choose whether and which firewall configurations to add by sending the request via ticket to the Hosting Solutions staff.
